Drunk driving is a real killer on our roads and the holidays can be especially dangerous.
45% of car fatalities that happen between Christmas and New Year's Day are caused by drunk driving. In a news release recently incoming MADD National President Helen Witty said,
"Christmas Eve, Christmas, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day fall on Monday and Tuesday this year. This means long weekends for many people, and we know that fewer working days can mean more days celebrating and potentially more drunk driving crashes nationwide. For this year especially, we want to remind people that one of the best gifts you can give, is to get home safely."
To keep you and your family safe, never drink and drive. Have a designated driver or hire a driver to make sure you get home safely.
Attorney Season Atkinson serves on the National MADD Board of Directors and would like to encourage everyone to select either a non-drinking, designated driver or hire a driving service like Uber or Lyft to drive you to and from your destination. And of course, real friends don't let friends drive drunk.
For those of you driving sober make sure you are focused on your surroundings and be aware that others may not be. Distracted driving is never a good thing but be focused on the road and don't use your cell phone!
